The Half of Every Rep You've Been Throwing Away
Watch someone finish a set of dumbbell curls. They fight for the lift. Then, at the top, the effort stops and the weight falls back down.
They just did the work and threw away the other half of it.
Every repetition has two phases. The concentric; the lift, the shortening, the part everyone counts. And the eccentric; the lowering, where the muscle produces force while it lengthens under load.
Most people treat the second half as travel time between reps. A 2026 review in the Journal of Sport and Health Scienceby Professor Kazunori Nosaka at Edith Cowan University makes the case that this is backwards, and that the lowering phase may be the most efficient strength stimulus available to us.
The mechanism
Muscles can generate greater force during eccentric contractions than during concentric or isometric ones while using less metabolic energy, less oxygen, and producing a lower heart rate response.
That combination is unusual, and it is the whole story. Higher mechanical tension is the primary driver of strength and hypertrophy adaptation. Lower metabolic cost means less systemic fatigue. You are getting a bigger stimulus for a smaller physiological bill.
For most training methods, force and fatigue rise together. Eccentric work decouples them.
Why this got a bad reputation
Eccentric training has historically been associated with soreness, DOMS, peaking one to three days after unfamiliar work. That soreness is why a lot of people avoid it, and why some coaches program it timidly.
Nosaka's review reframes this directly. The soreness is real, but it is not damage in the harmful sense, and it does not persist. After the first exposure or two, the muscle adapts the repeated bout effect and the soreness response drops sharply. Introduced progressively, eccentric work delivers a strong stimulus without the wreckage people associate with hard training.
His broader argument is the one worth repeating to clients: the belief that exercise has to be exhausting or painful to count is keeping people out of the gym entirely. That belief costs more health than any training method ever gained.
It does not require a gym
This is the part that makes it genuinely useful for the people who need it most, older adults, deconditioned beginners, anyone rebuilding after a layoff, anyone whose cardiovascular system cannot tolerate a hard traditional session.
Eccentric work already lives in ordinary movement. Walking downstairs. Hiking downhill. Lowering yourself into a chair.
Nosaka's starting recommendations for beginners are close to free:
Chair squats — emphasise the descent, sit slowly, stand however you can
Heel drops — from a step, lower the heels below the platform under control
Wall or incline push-ups — slow the lowering, reset without fighting the press
Downhill walking — the same route, walked the other direction, is a different stimulus
Five minutes. No equipment. Real adaptation.
How I want you to apply it
If you already train with me, you do not need a new programme. You need to stop giving the negative away.
Count the lowering. Three seconds down on your main lifts. Actually count it , you will be embarrassed how fast you have been going.
Control it, do not brake it. Smooth and deliberate, not a dead stop. The muscle should be working the entire descent.
Do not chase soreness. Soreness is not the goal and never was. It is a byproduct of novelty, and it fades.
Load it only after you own it. Tempo first, then weight.
Same session. Same exercises. Roughly double the useful stimulus.
The honest caveat
This is a narrative review, not a randomised controlled trial. It synthesises decades of work much of it from Nosaka's own lab, which is worth naming into a case for eccentric training as standard practice.
Nosaka himself flags the limits: maximal eccentric contractions are not appropriate for everyone, particularly unfit or untrained populations, and technique and progressive introduction matter. Rhabdomyolysis is a real, if rare, risk with aggressive unaccustomed eccentric loading. Start light. Warm up properly. Build in.
This is a strong, mechanistically coherent argument for a method that has been underused for decades. It is not a claim that eccentric training replaces everything else you do.
